Diggin’: Grotto Sessions – Rufus McKenzie – Mother Sleep On

inTheir Musicon December 3, 2018

Rufus McKenzie’s raw style is as a precursor to soul music. The roots of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye can be heard in his voice — and this remixed version featuring a heavy bass line, guitar, piano and anthemic hand claps modernizes what was a very sparse and traditional field holler. The remix is part of the Grotto Sessions, which was released on Nov. 16th, created last summer by three former interns from France. They spent the better part of last summer in the Music Maker studio, affectionately called The Grotto, working on this project.
