Listen:  David Bryant’s “One More Time”

Around Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, it is tradition to listen to the blowing of the shofar, a primitive bugle made out of a ram’s horn. The idea is that hearing the shofar wakes up your conscious, and even though the year may have been a blur of responsibilities and routines, at that moment before high judgement is passed on your soul, you may have a chance to wake up and think and make right.
The value of thoughtful reflection is universal, not just relevant to Jews. Just as Socrates said, the unexamined life is one not worth living. A few weeks ago, we had the honor to record David Bryant in his home in Oxford, GA. This week’s dig is one of the standout recordings from that session, a traditional gospel tune called “One More Time.” David hits a sweet groove on his guitar, using it more rhythmically than for chords, and sings beautifully over it. Midway through the song, the wall clock rings out noon. The bell chimes compliment the singing and playing perfectly like a call to prayer within the song. As the bells ring, David plays on unperturbed.
