This Como Mama Gets a New Roof!
inTheir Needson May 5, 2020
Ester Mae Wilbourn, the eldest of the Como Mamas, embodies the Southern gospel tradition. Her voice is powerful enough to shake the floorboards and burst through walls like Joshua’s trumpet. She and her cousins, Della Daniels and Angelia Taylor, carry on the longstanding musical legacy of Como, Mississippi by performing all over the world.
For years, Ester worked to pay off the mortgage on the modest brick, ranch style home she inherited from her mother. She recently transitioned to live in the house, but years of vacancy meant it needed long overdue repairs and, most importantly, a roof.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Music Maker was able to put a new tin roof on Ester’s home earlier this month, before the pandemic really started to set in. The repair has given Ester a new sense of security, comfort, and strength while in quarantine.
In response to the pandemic, a generous team of donors pledged to match all gifts, dollar for dollar, up to $60,000. Give today and your gift will go twice as far. That means twice the food, twice the medicine, and twice the emergency supplies for those who are most vulnerable.
