Recorded in Whitetop Mountain, Virginia Spencer Branch features siblings Kilby Spencer and Martha Spencer along with North Carolina Native, Kelley Breiding. Their music blends original and traditional songs, drawing from the band’s mountain heritage. With thirteen tracks, the album features Martha and Kelley’s entrancing harmonies backed by their skillful banjo and guitar playing as well as Kilby’s steadfast fiddling.
Spencer Branch is the band’s first project together, and includes three original tracks written by budding songwriter, Martha Spencer. Her poetic lyrics come vividly to life in “Black Widow Lady,” “Rest for the Wicked,” and “Blown Back with the Breeze.” The powerful imagery that her words conjure remain faithful to the Appalachian music tradition, though they are totally her own. The band is steeped in their local heritage, but their sound is fresh and unique. Upon listening to the album, Taj Mahal stated, “It’s the Appalachian music of the 21st century,” and added, “I’ve waited 30 years to hear such music.”
Born and raised in Whitetop Mountain, Virginia, Martha Spencer and Kilby Spencer grew up playing old-time music, learning the tradition from their parents, Thornton and Emily Spencer, who have been performing in the Whitetop Mountain Band for over 40 years. Martha and Kilby continue to perform with their parents.
