Essie Mae Brooks‘s voice and Cool John Ferguson‘s guitar were meant for one another on this track from Brooks’ 2000 album Rain in Your Life. Brooks’ voice is so grounded, Ferguson’s guitar is so ethereal, but they create a perfect balance that captures both the every-day sing-to-survive humanity of gospel music and the lightness of the Spirit which Essie Mae Brooks sings to feel. Listening a little closer, the two artists aren’t so different after all – there is as much precision and grace in Brooks as in Ferguson, and as much solidity and heart in Ferguson as in Brooks.
