Our newest partner artist, Mary Lane, is no stranger to struggle. Born in 1936, in Clarendon, Arkansas, she grew up picking cotton until moving to Chicago where she became a staple on the Westside Blues scene, playing alongside greats such as Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, and Junior Wells.

At 83, and with very few gigs, Mary fell behind on her rent and was facing eviction. Through our Sustenance Program, Music Maker gave Mary an emergency grant so she could remain in her home. Our Artist Support Specialist Christelle Ndong, MSW secured additional assistance from a local nonprofit. Things have stabilized for Mary, but continued support will be critical to ensure that her basic needs are met and a roof stays over her head.
