A Chicago Blues Legend, Spared from Eviction

inThe Artistson November 27, 2019

Our newest partner artist, Mary Lane, is no stranger to struggle. Born in 1936, in Clarendon, Arkansas, she grew up picking cotton until moving to Chicago where she became a staple on the Westside Blues scene, playing alongside greats such as Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, and Junior Wells.

At 83, and with very few gigs, Mary fell behind on her rent and was facing eviction. Through our Sustenance Program, Music Maker gave Mary an emergency grant so she could remain in her home. Our Artist Support Specialist Christelle Ndong, MSW secured additional assistance from a local nonprofit. Things have stabilized for Mary, but continued support will be critical to ensure that her basic needs are met and a roof stays over her head.

It is only through your support that we can continue to assist musicians like Mary Lane. Your generosity shows musicians that you care, helps them reach their creative potential, and makes a statement that our cultural heritage matters.

Please help important musicians like Mary Lane by renewing your support for Music Maker with a  gift. All donations made on December 3rd, 2019 will be matched up to $25,000 for #GivingTuesday- http://archive.musicmaker.orgdonations

Your support helps low-income musicians in meaningful and tangible ways that directly impact their safety, health, and well-being, allowing them to share their music with the world. Thanks to your contributions, these artists can do more than just survive—they can thrive.
