Funk, Blues, Soul and Rock n’ Roll run through Robert Lee Coleman’s veins, and you can hear them all in his latest studio album, What Left, out March 27th on Music Maker Recordings. The album encapsulates the deep musical roots of Robert’s hometown of Macon, GA, with the use of his local band. The album was recorded in Athens, GA at the legendary John Keane Studios (R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Jimmy Herring) and produced by NYC bluesman Zak Alister and Tim Hatfield (Keith Richards, Death Cab For Cutie, Steve Earle). “One of the Swingiest, Bluesiest, deepest, sweatiest and most emotional record I’ve ever had the honor, pleasure and joy to produce.

What Left takes you on a sonic journey through one of the greatest musical epicenters of the United States. Otis Redding and the Allman Brothers both hail from Macon, GA and during that same era Robert got to perform on some of the world’s greatest stages when, in 1964, he became a guitarist for Percy Sledge until 1969. Robert wasn’t out of work for too long though. Shortly after leaving Percy Sledge’s band he joined up with none other than James Brown. Robert even penned the lick for Brown’s hit song Hot Pants which was a number-one R&B hit and reached number fifteen on the pop chart in the US.

After playing with a variety of local bands and touring acts throughout the 80s and 90s Robert got connected with the Music Maker Relief Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping the true pioneers of American roots music through an array of programming opportunities for elderly musicians. This partnership led to Robert’s a connection to NYC bluesman Zak Alister who jumped on the chance to make a third studio album.

The album starts off with a funky rendition of Real Motha For Ya, and then rolls into a Robert Lee Coleman classic, Somebody Loves Me. From there, What Left hits you with the playful tune Shoe Is on the Other Foot and then on to Done Forgot About Love where Robert touches on his Country music roots.
