Etta James, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf are among the world’s best-known Blues musicians – documented in recordings, film and photographs.

But for nearly 20 years, Tim Duffy focused his lens on other blues musicians – Southern blues and gospel artists who have had long careers but in old age found themselves struggling and in poverty. Over those years, he recorded and cataloged their work as part of the Music Maker Relief Foundation he founded to help these older artists.

Now, some of the portraits he took are on display as part of the nationally touring exhibit “Our Living Past: A Platinum Portrait of Music Maker,” which makes a stop in Louisville this month.

Duffy generated these images using large format cameras to create wet plate collodion tintype portraits printing on thin pieces of metal treated with a collodion emulsion solution, a practice dating back to the 19th century.

In conjunction with the exhibit is a concert this month featuring Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen, who performed for many years in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina forced her to move to North Carolina; Cool John Ferguson, whom Taj Mahal called one of “the five greatest guitarists in the world”; Harvey Dalton Arnold, who performs a left-handed finger-picking style and slide playing on electric and acoustic guitars; and Drummer James “Bubba” Norwood’ who has played with many legendary artists including Ike and Tina Turner.
