Listen: The Winding Stream

“Oh, give to me a winding stream, it must not be too wide, where waving leaves from Maple trees do meet from either side, the water must be deep enough to float a small canoe, with no one else but you. Do not disturb my waking dream…”

It is a sweet dream, one that Susan and Tim Wells, the husband and wife duo that make up Red Rover, lull you into with their lush harmonies over ¾ time. Tim and Susan recorded “The Winding Stream” at Music Maker’s Grotto studio this past weekend with Music Maker intern Thomas Heisler at the controls. When I called Tim for the title of the song and its origin, he told me he was not surprised that I chose it because they had all felt that there was something electric in this recording.

Red Rover plays understated old time country songs that emphasize close harmonies complemented by simple accompaniment, usually just a guitar or banjo and spoons. Their material is lighthearted and lovely and perfect to accompany an afternoon on the front porch watching the leaves fall off the trees and dance their way to the ground.
