Listen: The Girl I Left Behind Me
As I made my first visit to Asheville, North Carolina, last week I couldn’t help but think about the musical traditions rooted in the mountains I headed towards. As I drove on I-40, passing signs for places like Mount Airy and Black Mountain I was reminded of the various bluegrass musicians Music Maker has encountered. A few months ago I wrote short bios for figures such as Benton Flippen and JC McCool, known for their master musicianship. So inspired by my trip to Asheville, where I explored the local eats, tasted wine at the Biltmore estate and hiked on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I chose to write this Diggin’ on Benton Flippen’s “The Girl I Left Behind Me.” Listen to the Surry County born musician and you’ll understand why his fiddling earned him so much recognition.
