Biography

Jahue Rorie was born in 1936 in the country outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Jahue has a great repertoire of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Arthur “Big Boy” Cruddup, and Blind Boy Fuller songs. He has been following bluesmen playing in North Carolina drink houses since the 1950s.

How We Helped:
Music Maker Relief Foundation welcomed Jahue aboard in 1991. The foundation has helped him financially with grants for expenses, as well as professionally with recordings on Music Maker compilation records. In addition, Music Maker arranged performances for Jahue at the Charlotte Jazz Festival and Sam’s Drink House in North Carolina, and featured him in the book Music Makers: Portraits and Songs from the Roots of America (2004).

“I spend my time fishing and catching snapping turtles out of the creek. That is how I get by. I eat the fish and I sell the turtles around town for some money. I used to work construction but I am not able to do that work anymore. I have known a great many bluesmen and I love to play. When I first came to town I played for three days against Guitar Gabriel trading back and forth seeing who knew the most blues. He did put me down, but were always remained good friends.” – Jahue Rorie
